In 1998 actress Diahann Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer. As the guest speaker at a luncheon to support breast cancer awareness Ms. Carroll shares her experience and is now a breast cancer survivor. Ms. Carroll is the spokeswoman for the National Women's Center for Research Alliance and an advocate for early detection and prevention in the fight against breast cancer. As early as the year 1967, the movies screens sent a message out to women in the movie "Valley of the Dolls". Early detection, was mentioned in a scene where Jen, a struggling actress finds a lump in her breast that was malignant. Early detection is "key".
Dr. Eric Whitaker, former Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health in his interview, details the State's health care initiatives via the Illinois Breast & Cervical Cancer Program expanded by Governor Rod Blagojevich, for minoirity women in underserved communities. Dr. Whitaker also describes programs in place for women who do not have access to screening and health insurance. These programs provide screening for early detection and medical treatment resources for women who are not able to afford health care.
Senator Mattie Hunter provides information on Senate Bill 1# she introduced to the Senate in efforts of the President of the Senate, Senator Emil Jones to raise revenue for support of breast cancer awareness. This bill was passed to provide funding for education, research and awareness in regard to breast cancer through the state's lottery program with the purchase of a $2.00 game titled "Ticket For The Cure". Senate Bill 3037 changes the name of the Ticket for the Cure Grant Fund to the Carolyn Adams Ticket for the Cure Grant Fund.
